Summary: The Bilingual/ESL teacher shall provide instruction to help potentially English proficient students develop cognitive, academic language abilities in order to function at grade level in monolingual English classes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES &
Responsibilities:
- Identifies and assesses academic level, language proficiency level, cultural history and linguistic history of students who may be/are eligible for bilingual services;
- Makes recommendations as to the best placement within the bilingual program (full or part time);
Provides direct bilingual and English-As-A-Second-Language (ESL) instruction to students;
- Designs lessons and coordinates instruction provided by bilingual instructional aides to students in the bilingual class;
- Participates in the Child Study Team meetings and staffings of potentially English proficient students.
- Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy.
- Provides learning experiences that develop the basic communication skills, using tape recorders and other electronic equipment as appropriate.
- Provides individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Evaluates each pupils progress and communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress;
- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems;
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Other related duties as assigned.
